If you’re a digital nomad or location-independent business owner, you’re either overpaying for fragmented insurance coverage (travel, medical, etc.) or you’re severely underinsured. You have a health plan, travel insurance, and perhaps some medical evacuation coverage. But when you’re self-employed, you lack the kind of safety net you get while working for a company. And you can’t use a country’s social safety net because you’re not a citizen, right? You’re just walking around in the world!
So what do you do?
Travel insurance company Safety suite Looking to change that. They always wanted to create this comprehensive package for digital nomads that included insurance, employee benefits, and a social safety net.
I use their travel insurance all the time and they just launched what they call it Bedouin citizen Which seeks to address gaps in coverage.
What is a Bedouin citizen?
Bedouin citizen It is an annual membership that combines health coverage, travel protection, income protection and life insurance benefits in one plan. It is intended for location-independent entrepreneurs and business owners who spend more than half the year outside their home country and whose lives and income cross borders by default.
Nomad Citizen covers you globally with no residency restrictions (except Puerto Rico).
Who can subscribe?
Bedouin citizen It covers people under the age of 56 who earn at least US$4,000 per month. You register online, choose a start date, declare that you are in good health, and confirm that you will remain outside your passport country for more than half the year. You can also add your partner and any children under 18.
but from Should I subscribe? This is an interesting product. I definitely think there’s a place for it. After all, let’s say you’re an entrepreneur in Bali and don’t have access to any social safety net. What happens if I get sick or seriously hurt and are unemployed? A friend of mine was hit by a car in Mexico and was badly hospitalized and ate through the limits of his travel insurance very quickly. After that, he was unable to work for several months while in rehab and set up a GoFundMe to get help. A product like Nomadic Citizen would have helped him. Or help any other digital nomads who got hurt on the way and have to raise money.
I believe this product is useful for someone living in a country outside their own country without access to social services and a strong social safety net. For example, if you live in Sweden and have access to all the country’s benefits, this product probably isn’t for you because they have a lot of services, but if you live in Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia, or France but don’t have access to benefits, are just traveling around the world, have a high income, work alone, or have a family, then this product would be something to consider.
how much does it cost?
For those who registered on or after July 1, 2026,… Bedouin citizen Membership costs $443 per month for those ages 18-39. If you’re 40 to 49 years old, the cost is $665 per month, and $875 per month for those ages 50 to 55. Children cost $143 per month (couples on the plan can add their first child under 10 for free). You can pay monthly or annually.
A note about US coverage: Nomad Citizen is actually rolling out globally, including in the US, though it’s worth noting that the coverage limits weren’t designed for heavy use there… because the US healthcare system is just a mess.
What is included?
Income protection: Income protection is perhaps the single most compelling reason Nomad Citizen exists. Traditional income protection or disability insurance requires a stable employer, permanent address, and residency in a specific country. Self-employed people and sole traders who operate mainly across borders cannot be insured against loss of income through traditional schemes, such as government assistance.
If you’re a freelancer or remote worker and have lost your income (you’ve been laid off, your contracts have expired, or you’re unable to work due to a medical condition), Nomad Citizen pays you up to $4,000 per month for up to 4 or 6 months until you can get back on your feet. This benefit is not found anywhere else!
health insurance: Up to $1.5 million in annual coverage for inpatient, outpatient, prescription, dental, vision, mental health, maternity, preventive care, wellness treatments and more. This is similar to health insurance where you live and covers everything you need. It is much stronger than regular travel insurance, which is only available for emergencies.
Travel coverage: Flight delays, cancellations, stolen electronic devices, lost luggage, eviction, theft, family visits during hospitalization.
Parental leave: If you have a child or become a legal guardian of a child, they pay $4,000 per month so you can take time off work without worrying about money. There is a 3-year waiting period for this benefit.
Long-term disability: If something really serious happens to you and you have to stop working permanently, for example, because you lose your sight, are diagnosed with cancer, have a major stroke, or can no longer do basic things like walk, get dressed, or eat on your own, they pay you $4,000 a month until age 75.
Assistance in obtaining a visa: Members can browse and apply for different government versions of long-term visas designed for digital nomads (i.e. they can work on those visas) directly through our app interface without having to apply via government websites. They handle all direct communications with the government and check the quality of your application before submitting it to increase the chances of approval.
Bedouin care map: Find the best providers with our member-run database of over 4,000 healthcare providers worldwide, with ratings for service and English language level.
Payment cards: Use your SafetyWing Card to pay for covered services up to $500. This automatically creates a claim that has already been paid so you don’t have to wait for payment. The SafetyWing Card is a global prepaid debit card sent to every Nomad Citizen member, which they can use to pay for doctor appointments or prescriptions without using their own money.
24/7 human support: You will have access to live chat 24/7 so you can get an answer from a real person within a few minutes.
Everything in one app: Claims management, coverage details, customer service, and provider searches are all managed with Nomad Care Map and visa assistance through one app. There is no need to switch between your health insurance company, your travel insurance company, and a separate income protection provider (if applicable).
Submit claims
For health coverage, you can either pay out of pocket and submit a reimbursement request or contact our 24/7 team to arrange direct payment with your provider. For travel claims, you must collect documentation (police reports, carrier delay notices, receipts) and file the claim. To protect income, you work with SafetyWing to verify the loss and provide proof that you are actively seeking new income. Everything is managed through one app which makes it really simple and easy.
I love SafetyWing’s mission and use their travel insurance on all of my travels. This is new Bedouin citizen The product is ideal for people who work full-time and want some kind of income protection as well as more robust health and travel coverage and the kind of social safety programs you might get if you lived in one place. After all, when you’re a solopreneur, you worry about what happens if you get injured, can’t work, or have a child. It’s all on you, isn’t it? Nomad Citizen is the software that ensures that you won’t have to worry about this kind of thing anymore.
