NFL news, live updates: TreVeyon Henderson out vs. Seahawks, Aaron Donald out vs. 49ers; Patrick Mahomes will ‘most likely’ start Week 1

The Pittsburgh Steelers have an offer out to cornerback Joey Porter Jr., per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. The report also says that the two sides “are not close at this point.”

Pittsburgh has a history of not inking extensions during the regular season. Porter is heading into the final year of his rookie deal. If he does not agree with the Steelers on an extension, he will be a free agent next offseason.

This news comes on the heels of the New England Patriots making Christian Gonzalez the highest-paid CB in NFL history.

The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers released their first injury report of the week on Tuesday.

Neither star wide receiver Puka Nacua for the Rams nor star running back Christian McCaffrey appeared on the report.

Nacua had been missing time this preseason due to a psoas injury, which generally impacts someone’s hip flexor. McCaffrey was dealing with lower-body tightness, but that diagnosis was concerning, as it was what plagued him during the 2024 season.

Both can be added to the injury report later in the week, but for now, neither appears as the practice week begins ahead of Thursday night’s game in Australia.

It took a few tense exchanges, but Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finally found some common ground. Mayfield agreed to a three-year, $165 million extension to remain with the Buccaneers beyond the 2026 season, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.

Mayfield, 31, is coming off a season in which he threw for 3,693 yards and 26 touchdowns.

The deal comes as Mayfield was set to enter the final year of his contract with the Bucs. But when Mayfield got to training camp, he made it clear he preferred a long-term extension with the team instead of playing on a one-year deal.

Days before Tampa Bay’s season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals, that long-awaited deal arrived.

The New England Patriots have ruled out running back TreVeyon Henderson for Wednesday’s season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.

Henderson has been dealing with a lingering ankle injury throughout the preseason. He hasn’t practiced in over two weeks, but he made the trip to Seattle with the team.

The Los Angeles Rams are expecting to have star edge rusher Myles Garrett available in Melbourne, where the NFC West rivals are going head-to-head on Thursday.

Garrett, whom the Rams famously acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Browns this offseason, has been dealing with knee swelling this summer.

But it sounds like that won’t keep the two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year off the field in Week 1.

The Los Angeles Rams got a boost this offseason when veteran defensive tackle Aaron Donald chose to come out of retirement to join the defensive line.

Donald’s return will have to wait, however, as Rams head coach Sean McVay said that the defensive tackle will not be active for the team’s Week 1 game against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia. Donald will not be traveling to the game.

Chicago Bears standout nickel corner Kyler Gordon is away from the team as he tries to speed up his calf recovery. Gordon is working with his own trainer to try and get back on the field after an offseason injury prevented him from taking part in training camp.

Gordon is reportedly hoping to spend a few weeks away from the team before returning to practice, per NFL Network.

Chicago Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze isn’t practicing Tuesday and is considered “day-to-day” with “something different” than the foot injury he dealt with last season, head coach Ben Johnson told reporters, according to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin.

But the team is hopeful Odunze will be able to play Sunday in Carolina against the Panthers.

Mahomes saw his 2025 season end in December with an ACL injury. His offseason recovery has put him in a position to start next Monday night against the Broncos.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday that there is a “good chance” Mahomes is under center to start the opener.

It’s going to take something special to knock off the Los Angeles Rams this season. Perhaps the current titleholder of best quarterback in football.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says it’s not a coincidence the team freed up money recently. Jones implied the team is looking into a trade on the defensive side, noting that the timing of the team restructuring contracts was intentional.

Jones added, “We have the room to certainly make a trade right now,” before saying, “We’re in play, defensively.”

After 19 seasons, Mike Tomlin decided to step away from the Pittsburgh Steelers. He’ll spend the 2026 NFL season as an analyst instead.

But given Tomlin’s success in the NFL — and the fact that he didn’t retire — rumors are going to pop up any time a high-profile job becomes available. While Tomlin appears happy with his new role, he did reveal the one young quarterback he would love to coach right now.

No, it’s not Joe Burrow or Lamar Jackson, two quarterbacks he saw a lot of when he was with the Steelers. It’s Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen, who Tomlin said is “built for this” during an appearance on the PFF NFL Show.

Christian Gonzalez and the New England Patriots have agreed on a four-year, $135 million extension late on Monday night, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

The Patriots appeared to confirm the deal on social media, too.

Nick Bosa will be taking the field on Thursday in Melbourne. The 49ers’ star edge rusher has been dealing with tendinitis in his surgically repaired right knee and been limited in the preseason.

But the 49ers have no doubt that he’ll be out there with them against the Rams in Australia.

Jovaughn Gwyn will be the Baltimore Ravens’ starting center for their Week 1 opener at the Indianapolis Colts, head coach Jesse Minter announced on Monday.

Gwyn, 27, beat out nine-year veteran Ethan Pocic for the position. He takes over for three-time Pro Bowler Tyler Linderbaum, who signed a record-setting three-year, $81 million free-agent deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Tennessee Titans linebacker Cedric Gray is going through the NFL concussion protocol after being in an accident with a utility terrain vehicle. He suffered a concussion and minor injuries, according to a statement from the team.

The Titans also clarified that this was not a reckless driving incident, nor was any alcohol involved in the accident.
