Live injury updates
Nico Collins has been ruled out for the Houston Texans’ Week 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The wide receiver suffered a hamstring injury during Wednesday’s practice and he was not on the field Friday as the team continued preparations.
According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, Collins is dealing with a Grade 1 hamstring strain and it could keep him out for Week 3 as well.
Collins isn’t the only wide receiver at risk of missing Week 2. Both Lamar Jackson and Justin Herbert each could be without key weapons on Sunday.
In Baltimore, Ravens wideout Zay Flowers has been ruled out after leaving Week 1 with a hamstring injury. That issue had kept him out of practice all week after head coach Jesse Minter had labeled him day-to-day, but he was back on the field on Friday. Jackson will already not have Ja’Kobi Lane as a target after the rookie was placed on injured reserve following wrist surgery.

Ladd McConkey was at Los Angeles Chargers’ practice on Thursday, but working off to the side. The wide receiver suffered a rib injury during their Week 1 loss to the Arizona Cardinals and was also said to be day-to-day. He did take the field for Friday’s practice, but the Chargers have ruled him “questionable” for Sunday’s game.
Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua (hip) did not practice on Friday or Saturday and will be listed as questionable for Monday night’s matchup against the New York Giants. Head coach Sean McVay said Nacua is dealing with groin soreness and the issue is not related to the psoas ailment that affected him during preseason.

Flowers left Week 1 with a hamstring injury. That issue had kept him out of practice all week after head coach Jesse Minter had labeled him day-to-day, but he was back on the field on Friday and originally designated as doubtful.

After ruling out Joey Porter Jr. (back) for Sunday’s game against New England, wide receiver Michael Pittman has been downgraded from questionable to out.
Pittman, made three catches for 58 yards in the Week 1 win over the Falcons, did not practice on Thursday or Friday as he deals with a foot injury.

Cooper suffered an ankle sprain during the Jets’ Week 1 win over the Titans. On Friday, he was ruled out for their Week 2 matchup against the Packers and is now headed for injured reserve.
He is eligible to return as early as Week 5 against the Browns.

Bears QB Caleb Williams did not talk this week like a man coming off a 59-point performance. Facing Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Williams said — borrowing a phrase from his head coach — is a “mental war.”
Flores and Bears head coach Ben Johnson have gone head-to-head six times since 2023. Johnson’s side has won five, and four of those victories were 30-plus-point games when Johnson was in Detroit. Last season, Flores’ defense held Johnson’s offense to 24 and 19 points, with the Vikings beating the Bears in Chicago and losing by two points in the rematch at home.
Sunday’s meeting at Soldier Field comes after Johnson and Flores flexed their respective muscles in Week 1. Johnson’s Bears rang up 552 yards on the Panthers, including 291 on the ground. Flores’ Vikings blitzed the Packers’ Jordan Love into the dirt, with four sacks and 15 QB hits.
Neither the head coach nor coordinator is showing his opponent anything he hasn’t seen before — which is exactly the problem. Three years and six meetings in, both men are still finding new ways to make each other guess wrong.

It looks like Aaron Donald’s two-year retirement is officially ending on Monday.
The three-time Defensive Player of the Year told reporters on Friday that he intends to play in the Los Angeles Rams’ “Monday Night Football” game against the New York Giants in Week 2, via the team:
“That’s the plan. Two practices today, have another practice tomorrow and then we’ll see, but feeling good.”
The last game Donald played was the Rams’ wild-card round loss to the Detroit Lions on Jan. 14, 2024. He appeared happy in what turned out to be his first retirement, but rumblings of a return came soon after the Rams’ blockbuster trade for star pass-rusher Myles Garrett.

Los Angeles Rams star wide receiver Puka Nacua didn’t practice on Friday, according to the team’s injury report, which now lists him with a hip issue.
Nacua led the Rams with five receptions and 74 receiving yards during their season-opening defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia.
L.A. is hosting the New York Giants for “Monday Night Football” this week.

Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold has already been ruled out of Week 2 after sustaining an unusual hip injury, but head coach Mike Macdonald appears to have hope that Darnold will make his way back sooner rather than later.
Darnold left very early in Seattle’s defense-heavy win over the Patriots after sustaining the injury. On Friday, Macdonald told reporters that Darnold’s return timeline was still unclear, but that he’s “optimistic.”
“He’s on his way back,” Macdonald said, via Pro Football Talk. “Is it next week? Is it the week after, the week after that? I’m not sure. I’m optimistic, put it that way.”
This weekend, the Seahawks will face NFC West rival Arizona Cardinals with backup QB Drew Lock under center.

Lamar Jackson could be without another one of his weapons on Sunday. With rookie wideout Ja’Kobi Lane sidelined following wrist surgery, Zay Flowers could be sidelined for Week 2.
Flowers left Sunday’s win over the Colts with a hamstring injury. After missing practice during the week, he returned to the field on Friday, but has been designated as doubtful.
-
The Vikings have officially ruled out quarterback Kyler Murray with a concussion, the team announced Friday. Murray left Minnesota’s Week 1 win over the Packers after sustaining a scary hit, and was later placed in concussion protocol.
Carson Wentz will step in again as the team’s starter while Murray recovers.
-
Las Vegas tight end Brock Bowers was back on the field on Friday. It was his first practice since undergoing knee surgery earlier this month.
Bowers is considered day-to-day after a procedure to trim his meniscus, which kept him out of Las Vegas’ Week 1 win. His status for Sunday is still unclear, though he didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday.

Rush is expected to face the Panthers on Sunday with Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) still recovering and Michael Penix Jr. (ACL) ‘close’ to being at 100%.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski was not ready to name a Week 2 starter earlier this week, but with Tagovailoa and Penix dealing with separate injuries, it’ll be Rush under center again.

Fitzpatrick suffered a groin injury during the Jets’ Week 1 victory over the Titans. Also out this week against the Packers is rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr., who injured his ankle last week.

The Texans look like they will be without the wide receiver for their Week 2 matchup against the Bengals. Collins suffered the injury during Wednesday’s practice and will reportedly sit out on Sunday.

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Chris Olave popped up on the injury report Thursday with a hamstring injury that limited him in the day’s session.
Olave is coming off a monster season opener, in which he piled up 10 catches and 182 receiving yards during a 31-30 overtime defeat to the Detroit Lions.
On the other hand, longtime Saints running back Alvin Kamara — who was sidelined for that Week 1 contest with a knee injury he sustained in the preseason — was a full participant Thursday, the second day in a row he’s been listed with that practice status.
New Orleans is playing the Baltimore Ravens on the road on Sunday.

The Baltimore Ravens worked out receiver Brandin Cooks, according to reports. Zay Flowers’ status for Week 2 has yet to be determined, though he did not practice on Thursday due to a hamstring issue.
Cooks began last season with the New Orleans Saints before being waived, then signed by the Buffalo Bills. In total, he registered 24 receptions for 279 yards in 15 games.
A 14-year veteran, Cooks’ best season was 2015 when he caught 84 passes for 1,138 yards and 9 TDs for the Saints. During his career, he has six 1,000-yard seasons. He has also played for the New England Patriots, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans and Dallas Cowboys.
