Today, more than 325 organizations, including trade unions, advocates for older people and people with disabilities, women’s rights organizations, and others, issued a statement Open letter For those seeking health care reform, explaining why now is the time to provide Medicare for All.
The mission is led by Public Citizen, National Nurses United, the People’s Action Institute, Social Security Action, Physicians for the National Health Program, the Labor Campaign for Single Payer, and Medicare Now. The letter stated in part:
“We may face a once-in-a-generation opportunity to pass health care legislation in 2029. We must rally behind the boldest possible reform, Medicare for All, that brings together the broadest possible movement. Now is not the time to take overly complex, incremental measures that support the same systems we are seeing fail under the weight of attacks by Trump and Republicans. The American people are hungry for bold ideas that can transform fundamental institutions that have failed them for too long. They are looking for leaders who espouse strong interests and fight for the working class.
Now is the time to get organized and inspired! Support for Medicare for All is growing daily in our communities and in Congress. It is our best way forward, and it is rooted in the true promise: everyone in, no one out. A small minority of skeptics of health care policies may try to convince us that they are downsized, that structural change is unwinnable.
The reality is that alternative proposals do not move us toward Medicare for All, complicate our already broken system, and allow companies to continue taking advantage of patients.
