journalist Noa Avishaj Chanal She accused Israeli guards of treating her and other prisoners with “extreme brutality” on Monday, including beatings and “threats of rape,” after Israeli forces took them from international waters while they were on board the Freedom of Conscience flotilla.
In a Video statement Posting on social media, Schnall, a Los Angeles-born photojournalist who reported from the fleet for Drop Site News, recalled the “extreme brutality” she allegedly endured during her captivity.
“Our boat, ‘Conscience’, was attacked in international waters at around five o’clock on Wednesday morning,” said Shanal, who appeared in the video with a black eye and bruises. She added:
The brutality began immediately. We were taken through multiple levels of management and the first of many strip searches. At least one woman reported being physically penetrated by guards who made fun of her pain. Several members of the fleet reported seeing their valuables being looted by guards while searching bags. All of our hands were violently shoved toward the floor and our arms were held in cumbersome positions behind us, many of them bound with zip ties, and we were led through processing, sorted into groups of men and women, and then blindfolded. Many of the fleet’s 150 members, including myself, were targeted with extreme brutality throughout the imprisonment.
Shanal accused Israeli prison guards of beating her and other members of the fleet and closing her airways.
She said: “Any member of the fleet who disturbed the Israeli guards was subjected to severe and severe restrictions, and some were beaten.” “I was hung with metal shackles on my wrists and ankles, and I was beaten on my stomach, back, face, ears and skull by a group of male and female guards. One of them sat on my neck and face, blocking my airways.”
The journalist continued: “It is understandable that many comrades do not want to reveal their identities when recounting this treatment. During the evening, men were tortured by guards with attack dogs and rifles. Women were threatened with pepper spray. Our cell was awakened by threats of rape.”
In response to Schnall’s statement on Monday, a Drop Site News reporter Ryan Grimm books“The State of Israel claims to be a safe haven for Jews, but in Noa’s case, she was taken there against her will and brutalized.”
