NFL news, live updates: Rams’ Myles Garrett reportedly in line to return Sunday; Shedeur Sanders to start for Browns with Deshaun Watson in concussion protocol

We’re officially into Week 9 of the NFL season (and the looming NFL trade deadline), where teams will have to make a decision on the intended course of the remainder of their season — are they going all in? Or is it time to tear it all down and look toward the future?

NFL fans also await news on the fate of star running back Jonathan Taylor, who has been touted as a potential trade-deadline mover as the Indianapolis Colts kicked off their franchise reset with a fire sale. They’ve already traded away two foundational players, Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner, for several draft picks as they look to the future, leaving us to wonder whether Taylor could be next.

The Los Angeles Rams could be a deadline buyer, as they’ve won back-to-back games and are reportedly already getting a long-awaited midseason reinforcement in the form of edge rusher Myles Garrett, a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and the league’s single-season sack record holder.

Garrett’s in line for a return to game action on the road Sunday against the Washington Commanders, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport. Coming back from early-season knee surgery that landed him on injured reserve, Garrett has practiced all week.

Shedeur Sanders will start at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints, head coach Todd Monken announced.

Deshaun Watson returned to practice in a limited capacity on Friday, but remains in concussion protocol. Monken said it’s unclear if Watson will serve as the backup this week, though he will be listed as questionable

The Seattle Seahawks sent a pair of draft picks to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for six-time All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson.

After just one game in a Seahawks uniform, Nelson is now out.

He’s “week-to-week,” according to Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald, who told reporters Friday that the 30-year-old offensive lineman needs a minor knee procedure.

“We’re not going to put him on IR,” Macdonald said, via The Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta.

When asked what happened to Nelson, Macdonald said the interior o-lineman had something he was dealing with when he arrived.

“We re-imaged it, and it was aggravated to some degree, so we’ve kind of done the due diligence, and everybody agrees it’s best to take care of it now and play the long game.”

Notably, the Seahawks will also be down quarterback Sam Darnold (quad) this week against the Arizona Cardinals. Backup Drew Lock will start in his place.

Injuries continue to plague the Eagles, who will again be without top receivers DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks this week against the Giants. The team has officially ruled out both wideouts for Sunday’s game, after neither practiced on Friday.

Both Smith, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury, and Wicks, who has an ankle injury, have missed two games with the injury, and are set to now miss a third.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters Friday that rookies Peter Woods and Mansoor Delane won’t play Sunday against the New York Jets.

“They’re making progress, so that’s a positive thing,” Reid said of the defensive tackle and cornerback, per ESPN’s Nate Taylor.

Woods is dealing with a neck injury, and Delane is navigating a shoulder issue. Delane, this year’s No. 6 overall pick, hasn’t played since a Week 7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Woods, whom the Chiefs selected 29th overall back in April, suffered his setback last week in a defeat to the Denver Broncos.

The New England Patriots have ruled out both wide receiver A.J. Brown (ankle/knee) and running back TreVeyon Henderson (illness) for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

They’ve listed tight end Hunter Henry — the team’s receptions leader — as “questionable” with a foot issue.

Brown, whom the Patriots gave up a pair of picks for (including a 2028 first-rounder), has appeared in only three games this season. He suffered a high ankle sprain in the season opener and noted late last month that he wasn’t 100 percent upon returning to game action.

As for Henderson, the second-year back revealed on Friday that he was hospitalized after experiencing “unexplained neurological symptoms.”

Although the results of Henderson’s examination were “positive and reassuring,” doctors have yet to determine a cause, Henderson explained in his social media post.

Los Angeles Rams edge rusher Myles Garrett is in line for a return to game action on the road Sunday against the Washington Commanders, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.

Garrett, coming back from early-season knee surgery that landed him on injured reserve, has practiced all week.

The two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, who’s also the league’s single-season sack record holder, went under the knife in the wake of the Rams’ season-opening defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia.

Watson entered concussion protocol earlier this week after reporting symptoms on symptoms on Monday night. Shedeur Sanders has worked with the first team to prepare in case Watson was ruled out.

Watson has not cleared concussion protocol yet, but is able to practice on a limited basis.

While the New York Jets will get Breece Hall back after a five-game absence following a quad injury, wide receiver Garrett Wilson is out for the team’s road game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Wilson entered concussion protocol after taking a hit to the head during last week’s loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. He reported experiencing symptoms when he reported to the team’s practice facility on Monday.

New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson released a statement on social media Friday explaining that his absence from the team is due to “unexplained neurological symptoms” that forced him to be hospitalized. Some of his “physical functions” have also been affected.

Henderson says he was examined, and while the results were “positive and reassuring,” doctors have yet to determine a cause.

“Recently, I experienced an unexpected and unusual medical emergency involving a series of unexplained neurological symptoms that required hospitalization for several days,” Henderson wrote. “During that time, I underwent extensive medical testing and evaluation. While the results of my comprehensive medical testing have come back positive and reassuring, the cause of this remains unknown and unexplainable.

“I will continue working closely with specialists and physical therapists to focus on my recovery, as these symptoms have affected my strength, coordination, and some of my physical functions. I am committed to doing everything necessary to return to full health. My health and long-term well-being remain my foremost priorities.”

Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trent McDuffie appears to be sitting out his second consecutive day of practice with a back injury suffered in Week 8.

In six games this season, his first with the Rams, McDuffie has 25 tackles, 2 interceptions and 8 passes defended.

Perhaps looking ahead to McDuffie being unavailable for Week 9, the Rams signed veteran David Long to their practice squad, The Athletic’s Nate Atkins reports.

Long, 28, has played seven NFL seasons, most recently with the Carolina Panthers last year. During his career, he has averaged 20 tackles and 2 passes defended per season. Long was a 2019 third-round pick by the Rams.

Shedeur Sanders is getting closer to being named the starter for Week 9 against the Saints.

Watson took a helmet-to-helmet hit during the first quarter of Sunday’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. As part of protocol, Watson was evaluated again after the game, as well as on Monday morning. The Browns say he showed no symptoms and was cleared. But on Tuesday morning he told the team’s medical staff that he started experiencing concussion symptoms and was placed into concussion protocol.

Sanders, who has not started a game since Week 18 last season, made his second appearance of the season coming in briefly for Watson against the Steelers.

A trade was reportedly in place to send Minnesota Vikings receiver Jauan Jennings back to the San Francisco 49ers, his previous professional home for six seasons, until the player himself shot the deal down.

That was the story from Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer on Sunday, delivering the news that Jennings made clear he did not want to return to San Francisco when asked to get on a FaceTime call with Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch:

“It was contingent upon [Jennings] hopping on a FaceTime with Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch and saying, ‘OK, yeah, I want to come back,’ but he didn’t. He said, ‘Actually, no I want to stay here in Minnesota.'”

Shanahan addressed the matter Wednesday, confirming the report and telling reporters he was “not really” surprised that Jennings turned down the Niners. He did, however, emphasize the call was friendly in nature.
