Openai has announced plans to open the first office in India, just days after the launch of the Chatgpt plan designed for Indian users, as it looks forward to taking advantage of the AI market rapid growth in the country.
On Friday, the company said it would create a local team in India and open the company’s office in the capital, New Delhi, in the coming months. The move depends on the recent employment efforts in Openai in the region. In April 2024, the company appointed Trucaller and former Meta CEO, Pragiaa Misra as a public policy and partnerships in India. Openai also brought former Twitter India President Rishi Jaitly as a great advisor to help facilitate discussions with the Indian government on artificial intelligence policy.
India-the second largest market for smartphones and smartphones in the world after China-is a natural occasion for Openai, which competes with technology giants such as Google and Meta, as well as AI Upstarts such as confusion, all of which are looking to benefit from the huge user base in the country.
The company said it started to employ a local team in order to “focus on strengthening relations with local partners, governments, companies, developers and academic institutions.” It plans to obtain comments from Indian users to make their products related to the local audience and even building features and tools specifically for the country.
“Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to making advanced artificial intelligence easier throughout the country and building artificial intelligence of India, and with India,” Sam Altman, CEO of Openai, said in a statement.
Openai also announced that it will host the first educational summit in India this month and its first developed day in the country later this year.

India is not the first Asian office in Openai. The company has previously opened offices in the markets, including JapanSingapore, and South Korea.
