Pokémon-Themed Xbox Design Lab Controllers Include Giratina, Yveltal

A gamer has revealed a series of beautiful Xbox Design Lab controllers based on a number of fan-favorite Pokémon, including Giratina, Charizard and Yveltal.

A Pokémon fan has revealed a series of Xbox Series X/S Design Lab controllers based on multiple Pokémon species, including Charizard, Giratina, and Yveltal. While an official Pokémon and Xbox collaboration isn’t likely, the new custom controller-building suite from Microsoft means gamers can create their own controller with the same or similar colors as their favorite pocket monsters, despite some early problems with the Design Lab service causing some frustrations.

Xbox Design Lab returned in June after a temporary hiatus as the website moved from Xbox One controllers to the new Xbox Series X/S, and it’s proven so popular that Design Lab errors led to free $10 gift cards being issues. The suite lets customers customize and create the controllers of their dreams, with multiple color options for the front, back, D-pad, triggers and more. There are currently 18 colors to choose from, giving a wide range of customization options to suit every player. Users also have the option to engrave their creations via laser engraving, making Xbox Design Lab controllers a fantastic choice as a gift, or for gamers who like personalized items.

An early online fan favorite was the classic Xbox 360 controller remade with Design Lab, but that’s not all that can be brought to life. Reddit user mandoo12345 has shared their own 20 creations based on a range of different Pokémon spanning all Generations. Highlights include an Ivysaur-based controller, complete with pink accents similar to the bud Ivysaur has on its back, as well as a colorful Giratina-esque controller and a stunning rework of Yveltal. Reddit users have been particularly appreciative of a Charizard controller, which is created from colors remarkably similar to the Fire-type Pokémon.

Xbox Design Lab has delighted gamers with the ability to create custom controllers to add to their collection, with lots of tips to create unique Xbox Series X/S controller designs being shared online. Some yearn for Nintendo to join in on the idea with the Nintendo Switch Pro controller. The Pro Controller is a much more robust and reliable option for Switch gamers looking to avoid Joy-Con drift, but the official controller is only available in black (barring some special editions). Third-party Nintendo Switch controllers can be purchased in a wide range of designs and styles, but Nintendo has yet to branch out into customizable peripherals itself.

Despite its success, the service’s relaunch hasn’t been without issues. Many found fault with the website after it emerged that words banned from Xbox Design Lab are wildly inconsistent in execution and effectiveness. Design Lab’s return needs some changes to its core formula, but it’s hoped that the service will resolve its issues and expand to include even more customization options in future.
