Alien 5 Script Draft Was Worked On In March 2020

An image of the Alien 5 script from producer Walter Hill surfaces online, revealing that he worked on the script only a few months ago.

The script for Alien 5 was worked on back in March of this year. Ridley Scott’s Alien franchise may have started over 40 years ago, but it has remained a prevalent part of pop culture partly due to the unique creature design of the Xenomorph. The franchise got three sequels from 1986 to 1997, before crossing over with the Predator for two films in 2004 and 2007. Scott would return to the Alien franchise for two prequels, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, but there haven’t been any new films since the latter’s release in 2017.

For a while, it looked like District 9 director Neill Blomkamp would be helming Alien 5, which would have been a direct sequel to James Cameron’s Aliens. Ripley, Corporal Hicks, and Newt were all expected to be main characters in the film, but the project was delayed and eventually canceled due to the development of Alien: Covenant. Recently it was revealed that longtime Alien franchise producer Walter Hill had written an Alien 5 script, although it seemed that Sigourney Weaver wasn’t completely sold on the idea. Very little is actually known about Hill’s Alien 5 at this point, but the film was worked on rather recently.

A new image of an Alien 5 script was recently posted online by Brandywine Productions. Not a lot of detail can be pulled from the image, but the tagline, as well as two quotes from authors Edgar Allan Poe and William Tecumseh Sherman can be seen on the title page of the document. The image of the script does indicate that work is still being done on Alien 5, as this version of the script only dates back to March.

While the above script is the most recent spark of hope that Alien 5 might finally happen, there have been other hints of the franchise continuing. Cameron, who returned to the Terminator franchise last year, has shown interest in an Alien sequel, and Scott may or may not be done with the series. Scott has indicated numerous times he still wants to make his third Alien prequel, but that seems unlikely to happen at this point given Alien: Covenant lackluster reviews and box office performance.

Nobody knows if Alien 5 will happen at this point, but Hill’s script confirms that there is still a possibility of another sequel. It’s been indicated before that Disney might continue the Alien franchise after obtaining the rights from 20th Century Fox, but it remains to be seen what their true plan is for their newly acquired R-rated franchises. Disney could jump on the opportunity to make Alien 5 if they really like Hill and David Giler’s script, but it seems just as likely that they will let it sit in development for years to come.
