The Witcher: Blood Origin showrunner Declan De Barra recently discussed the potential of The Witcher spinoffs (via RadioTimes.com), but that does not sound like a good idea right now. Released as a four-part event series, The Witcher: Blood Origin is the first live-action The Witcher spinoff and takes place 1,200 years before the events of the main series. While Blood Origin follows a group of new, original characters, it also ties into The Witcher and its lore.

The Witcher: Blood Origin opens with Jaskier as a way to introduce the main story, which was a way to link the spinoff with The Witcher. However, other than the Jaskier scene and the post-credits scene, The Witcher: Blood Origin did not really have any major connections to The Witcher. Currently, The Witcher: Blood Origin has a 35% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics pointing out the show’s generic story and flawed execution despite the interesting characters.

Witcher Spinoffs Aren’t Appealing After Blood Origin
As the first live-action The Witcher spinoff, Blood Origin would set the tone for the future of Netflix’s The Witcher universe. Unfortunately, Blood Origin simply does not work either as a The Witcher prequel or as a standalone story. Blood Origin’s premise was to show a world before the Conjunction of the Spheres in which Witchers were yet to be created, but the result was a familiar fantasy tale that little had to do with the story viewers had been following in The Witcher. Blood Origin teases future events and expands The Witcher’s lore, but it never justifies the spinoff.
So far, The Witcher has been defined by the stories of Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer. Similar to The Witcher games, as rich and extensive as the Continent is, what truly makes The Witcher so unique are its main characters and their interactions. For a Witcher universe of spinoffs to work, the franchise would have to be more than just Geralt of Rivia or Ciri, which can only happen after at least one successful spinoff. While Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf worked, it was still very connected to Geralt’s story. When it comes to live-action, Blood Origin poses a challenge for the franchise’s future.
The Witcher Should Focus On Its Main Story Before More Spinoffs
The Witcher has to deliver the best possible main show before releasing more spinoffs. Unlike The Witcher season 1, which was mostly well-received both by those familiar with the Witcher universe and general audiences, The Witcher season 2 was overall divisive. Significant changes to the story such as Eskel dying in The Witcher season 2’s first episode or Yennefer losing her powers were risky, to the point a faithful adaptation of Time of Contempt and other The Witcher novels has become much more difficult. More than being a faithful adaptation, The Witcher’s future seasons have to live up to the expectations set by The Witcher season 1.
Henry Cavill will not return as Geralt of Rivia for The Witcher season 4, which also adds to the challenge The Witcher’s future seasons will have to overcome. The Witcher’s Geralt will be recast with Liam Hemsworth, meaning that The Witcher will have to establish a new version of the titular character. The Witcher’s seasons 3 and 4 will redefine the show, which is why spinoffs like The Witcher: Blood Origin should not be the focus right now. An argument can be made that The Witcher does not even ask for a universe, but any franchise potential should only be explored after Geralt’s story has advanced more.
