In the trailer, we get our first look at several stars who will appear in Nolan’s movie, which boasts one of the strongest casts of the year. In addition, audiences will get a glimpse at the groundbreaking visuals and practical effects used for Oppenheimer, which will be a major selling point for an IMAX viewing experience when the film arrives in theaters. The brand-new trailer, released by Universal Pictures YouTube, can be found below.

Oppenheimer is gearing up for the highly-anticipated release, which will be the first movie from Nolan since 2020’s Tenet. Oppenheimer arrives in theaters in summer of next year, making its debut on July 21, 2023.

Christopher Nolan has continued to push the boundaries of filmmaking with the use of practical effects in his movies. Now, for Oppenheimer, the director will film a real atomic bomb explosion to use in the upcoming film. Nolan recently discussed his approach to Oppenheimer and why he felt he needed to lean into the movie’s practical effects.

“I think recreating the Trinity test without the use of computer graphics was a huge challenge to take on… Andrew Jackson – my visual effects supervisor, I got him on board early on – was looking at how we could do a lot of the visual elements of the film practically, from representing quantum dynamics and quantum physics to the Trinity test itself, to recreating, with my team, Los Alamos up on a mesa in New Mexico in extraordinary weather, a lot of which was needed for the film, in terms of the very harsh conditions out there – there were huge practical challenges.”

Oppenheimer stars Murphy in the lead role, with Emily Blunt playing his wife, biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, according to Universal Pictures in the trailer. Matt Damon is General Leslie Groves Jr, Robert Downey Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, and Florence Pugh is psychiatrist Jean Tatlock. In addition, Benny Safdie is theoretical physicist Edward Tellar, Michael Angarano is Robert Serber, and Josh Hartness is a pioneering American nuclear scientist named Ernest Lawrence.

Fans can flock to the theater to see the movie with an atomic-sized cast, with Oppenheimer releasing on July 21 next year.
